What is a pre-authorisation?

A pre-authorisation is a temporary hold of a specific amount of the available balance on a credit or debit card. The pre-authorisation is not a charge and no funds have been debited from your account.

We are NOT charging your credit card or debit card. A pre-authorisation is a security guarantee for payment only. The pre-authorisation fund is not held by the doctor, by Zento or our bank (National Australia Bank).

The pre-authorisation puts a hold on your card temporarily from the available balance of your account. The pre-authorisation is held by the bank that has issued your credit card or debit card.

This confirms the availability of the requested funds in your account to cover the cost of your surgery.

Your available balance on your credit card is reduced by the amount of the pre-authorisation. If we pre-authorise a debit card, your bank will take the funds from your account. Either way, the funds that you can use to pay for other items or you can withdraw from an ATM is reduced by the amount of the pre-authorisation.

We cannot access the pre-authorisation funds. They are held by your bank in financial limbo until we complete the pre-authorisation (as described below).

How much is a pre-authorisation?

The amount that we pre-authorise will depend on the cost of your surgery.

Why is the credit card pre-authorised?
When you give us a credit card or a debit card, the pre-authorisation guarantees us that the funds are available to pay for any charges incurred.

Who is responsible for the pre-authorisation procedure?

We use the National Australia Bank credit card payment gateway. NAB is responsible for the maintenance and management of the pre-authorisation process on our side. Your bank is responsible for the process on your side.

When does the pre-authorisation get processed from your credit card?

After your procedure and once we receive the necessary information from your doctor, we complete the pre-authorisation for the finalised amount. This should result in a charge for the finalised amount being processed and any balance being released back to you.

Usually, this will appear on your credit card statement within 3 working days.

When does the pre-authorisation get released from your credit card?

If your procedure is cancelled or does not go ahead for any reason, we will not complete the pre-authorisation. We will let the pre-authorisation lapse.

The time it takes to lapse and for the funds to be released to your card depends on your individual credit card or debit card and the bank that has issued the card.

It can take up to 15 days to be released into your account. Some issuing banks may take longer.

The pre-authorisation should be released by your issuing bank automatically. If not you will need to contact your home issuing bank.

We cannot instruct our bank to instruct your bank to release the pre-authorisation. We can only let it lapse.

  • Please note that we reserve the right to pre-authorise your credit card 24 hours before your surgery. Non-valid credit cards, debit cards or declined pre-authorisations will result in automatic cancellation of your surgery.
